OANDA, offered through OANDA (Canada) Corporation ULC, ranks first on our list with our global score of 92 out of 100, and I would start there. Category-weighted score 88.3. Published rating 92, which includes an editorial adjustment of +3.7. Adjustments are disclosed on every page they apply to; see our methodology.

Why We Recommend OANDA

OANDA is position 1 of 8 on this page, and it is where I would send you first if you trade CFDs in Canada. OANDA (Canada) Corporation ULC is the CIRO dealer behind the brand, registered as an investment dealer in every province and territory and a derivatives dealer in Quebec. I recommend it for traders who want spread-only standard pricing with no minimum deposit, and a core plan that drops the advertised EUR/USD minimum spread to 0.0 pips for a commission. Traders starting with a small balance will find, in my view, that the no-minimum standard account makes entry easy.

Pros & Cons
  • Standard pricing is spread only, with an advertised EUR/USD spread of 0.6 pips for typical order sizes.
  • The core plan advertises a minimum spread of 0.0 pips plus a commission of C$1 per 10,000 units traded.
  • There is no minimum deposit for standard pricing.
  • The demo account does not expire.
  • CFDs span forex, indices, commodities, metals, and bonds.
  • "OANDA does not currently accept Alberta residents as clients."
  • Share CFDs are not listed on the Canadian site.
  • Crypto CFDs are not listed on the Canadian site.
  • The core spread + commission plan requires a C$10,000 balance or deposit.
Broker's Detail

OANDA (Canada) Corporation ULC offers forex, indices, commodities, metals, and bonds as CFDs. Its advertised EUR/USD spread is 0.6 pips for typical order sizes on standard spread-only pricing. On the core plan the advertised minimum spread is 0.0 pips plus a commission of C$1 per 10,000 units, and the plan needs a C$10,000 balance or deposit. The minimum trade size is 1 unit, so you can size positions from the smallest possible step. In my opinion that 1-unit step gives you finer control over position size than the 1,000-unit minimums some other brands on this page publish.

EUR/USD margin is 5% (20:1) in a CAD base account and 3% (33.3:1) in a USD base account, per the firm's legal margin-rates page. There is no minimum deposit for standard pricing, so you can open with whatever balance suits your budget. Accounts are open to residents of Canada with a valid social insurance number or Canadian visa entry document, and the firm does not accept Alberta residents. It is a derivatives dealer in Quebec. Gold margin runs 22% in a CAD base account and 20% in a USD base account, so metals tie up more of your capital than forex.

CIRO dealer

Friedberg Mercantile Group Ltd.: CIRO directory, read September 26, 2026; CIPF member

Why We Recommend FXCM

FXCM sits at position 2 of 8 through Friedberg Direct, a division of Friedberg Mercantile Group Ltd., the CIRO dealer that also offers AvaTrade in Canada. I recommend it for Canadians who want a broad CFD menu, since the product guide lists cash index CFDs, energy, soft commodities, metals, treasury CFDs, and single-share CFDs. Default pricing builds opening and closing fees into the spread with no additional charge, and the free demo comes with "$50,000 of virtual money".

Pros & Cons
  • CFDs span stock indices, energy, soft commodities, metals, treasury CFDs, and single-share CFDs.
  • Metal CFDs cover seven instruments, from XAU/USD and XAG/USD to copper and base-metal spot.
  • Default pricing builds opening and closing fees into the spread with no additional charge.
  • The Active Trader account adds dedicated support, free API access, market depth, and a complimentary VPS.
  • The free demo comes with "$50,000 of virtual money".
  • The firm states "the account minimum for any new account is 5,000" in your base currency.
  • Commission accounts, only where the firm designates them in a written notice, charge EUR/USD at US$5.00 per 100k per side in a USD base and C$7.00 per 100k per side in a CAD base.
  • No EUR/USD spread figure is published on the pages we read (the rate card, the spread-costs page, and the EUR/USD page).
Broker's Detail

Friedberg Direct, a division of Friedberg Mercantile Group Ltd., offers cash index CFDs such as SPX500 and NAS100, energy, soft commodities, metals, treasury CFDs, and single-share CFDs across US, UK, HK, and EU markets. Default pricing builds fees into the spread with no additional charge, and no EUR/USD spread figure is published in the rate card, the spread-costs page, or the EUR/USD page. Where the firm designates a commission model in writing, EUR/USD costs US$5.00 per 100k per side in a USD account or C$7.00 per 100k per side in a CAD account, so check which model your account carries before you fund it.

The firm states EUR/USD margin per 10K lot as US$370 in a USD account and C$840 in a CAD account, with a liquidation level of 10% of that. The firm states "the account minimum for any new account is 5,000" in base currency, and the card deposit minimum is 50. No province is excluded on the site, and derivatives offered to Quebec residents are authorized by the Quebec AMF. Active Trader Tier 1 needs US$25,000 equity and 50M to 150M monthly volume, so my view is that this tier only suits you if you trade serious size.

Why We Recommend FOREX.com

FOREX.com holds position 3 of 8 through GAIN Capital - FOREX.com Canada Ltd., a CIRO dealer registered as an investment dealer in every province and territory and a derivatives dealer in Quebec. I recommend it for Canadians who want a large CFD catalogue plus a choice of pricing, since the RAW account page lists "2,700+ Canadian and global CFDs". Alberta residents can open an account only as accredited investors. Traders who want raw pricing will find, in my view, that the RAW account's advertised 0.0 pips plus commission is worth their attention.

Pros & Cons
  • CFDs span forex, Canadian and global stock CFDs, indices, ETFs, energies, softs, and metals.
  • The advertised Standard EUR/USD spread is as low as 1.0 pips with no commission.
  • The RAW Pricing account advertises EUR/USD from 0.0 pips plus commission.
  • The minimum initial deposit is "$100".
  • The demo account comes with "$50,000 in virtual funds".
  • Alberta residents can open an account only as an accredited investor.
  • The RAW commission is US$7 per US$100,000 traded per side.
  • Demo accounts on FOREX.com platforms last for 90 days after sign up and cannot be renewed.
Broker's Detail

GAIN Capital - FOREX.com Canada Ltd. offers forex, stock CFDs, indices, ETFs, commodities, and metals as CFDs. The advertised Standard EUR/USD spread is as low as 1.0 pips with no commission. The RAW Pricing account advertises EUR/USD from 0.0 pips plus a commission of US$7 per US$100,000 traded per side, on FOREX.com platforms and MT5 only. The minimum trade size is 1,000 units for currencies, so your first FX position starts at that step.

EUR/USD margin is 5% for CAD based accounts and 3% for USD based accounts, and the firm warns that MMR on MetaTrader could be higher. The minimum initial deposit is "$100", with "$2,500" recommended and a card minimum of "$100" per transaction, so you can open with a small amount and decide later how much to commit. No province is excluded, and Alberta residents must be accredited investors. Gold margin runs 22% for XAU/USD in a CAD base account and 20% in a USD base account, so metals tie up more of your capital than FX pairs. In my opinion the two account types give you a clean choice between simple and raw pricing.

Why We Recommend CMC Markets

CMC Markets takes position 4 of 8 through CMC Markets Canada Inc., a CIRO dealer registered as an investment dealer in all provinces and territories and a derivatives dealer in Quebec. I recommend it for Canadians who want one multi-asset CFD account with no minimum deposit. Its advertised Standard EUR/USD minimum spread is 0.5 pips, and an FX Active account drops the advertised spread to 0.0 pips for a commission. Alberta residents must qualify as accredited investors. Traders who value a broad market list will find, in my view, that this menu covers them well.

Pros & Cons
  • CFDs span currencies, commodities, shares, ETFs, indices, and treasuries, plus OTC options on select indices.
  • The advertised Standard EUR/USD minimum spread is 0.5 pips with no separate FX commission.
  • There is no minimum deposit.
  • The FX Active account advertises EUR/USD from 0.0 pips plus commission.
  • The demo account comes with $10,000 worth of virtual funds.
  • Alberta residents must represent they are accredited investors under NI 45-106 and trade as principal.
  • MT4 and MT5 need a separate Standard or FX Active account that does not give access to the CMC platform or TradingView.
  • Accounts are open only to residents of Canada who are at least 18 and not a US Person.

CMC Markets Canada Inc. offers currencies, commodities, shares, ETFs, indices, and treasuries as CFDs, plus OTC options on select indices. Why We Recommend AvaTrade

AvaTrade holds position 5 of 8 through Friedberg Mercantile Group Ltd., the same CIRO dealer that also offers FXCM in Canada. I recommend it for Canadians who want simple pricing: the firm states "AvaTrade does not charge commissions on any trade", and the advertised EUR/USD standard spread is 0.6 pips. The CFD menu covers forex, commodities, indices, share CFDs, bonds, and vanilla options. Traders who prefer one predictable cost will find, in my view, that spread-only pricing like this suits them.

Pros & Cons
  • CFDs span forex across 36 pairs, commodities including gold, silver, and platinum, stock indices, share CFDs, and bonds.
  • FX and metal vanilla options are available through AvaOptions.
  • The advertised EUR/USD standard spread is 0.6 pips, spread only.
  • An Islamic account designation is available.
  • The demo account covers MT4, MT5, WebTrader, and the mobile app.
  • The minimum deposit is C$300 in a CAD account or US$250 in a USD account.
  • No crypto CFDs appear in the Canadian product guide.
  • The demo virtual balance is not stated.
Broker's Detail

Friedberg Direct, a division of Friedberg Mercantile Group Ltd., offers forex across 36 pairs, commodities including gold, silver, and platinum, stock indices, share CFDs, bonds, and vanilla FX and metal options. The advertised EUR/USD standard spread is 0.6 pips, and the firm states "AvaTrade does not charge commissions on any trade" and that it is compensated through the bid-ask spread. The minimum trade size on EUR/USD is 1,000 units, so your first position on that pair starts there.

EUR/USD margin is 3.00% in a USD account, per the product guide. Gold margin is 4.80%, silver 8.40%, and crude oil 7.80%. The minimum deposit is C$300 in a CAD account or US$250 in a USD account, so your entry cost is a stated figure with no separate commission to add on top. The Customer Agreement is governed by Ontario law, and no province exclusion is stated on the pages we read. In my opinion the stated deposit makes your start-up cost easy to plan.

Why We Recommend Plus500

Plus500 takes position 6 of 8 through Plus500CA Ltd., a CIRO dealer registered as an investment dealer in all provinces and territories of Canada except Quebec. I recommend it for Canadians who want one proprietary platform with spread-only pricing and a low entry point: the minimum deposit is C$100 and there are no dealing commissions. Pros & Cons
  • CFDs span shares, ETFs, forex, options, indices, and commodities.
  • There are no dealing commissions.
  • The minimum deposit is C$100.
  • The demo account has unlimited virtual funds with no time limit.

EUR/USD initial margin is 5.00% with maintenance at 2.50%, which is 20:1. Gold initial margin is 6.46% (15:1), so metals tie up more of your capital than the FX pair.

The minimum deposit is C$100, and each deposit method has its own minimum shown on the Deposit screen. Plus500CA Ltd. is registered in all jurisdictions except Quebec, so Quebec residents cannot use it. Alberta clients must be accredited investors under NI 45-106 and trade as principal. EUR/USD margin, as stated

EUR/USD margin rate 5% in a CAD-denominated account, 3% in a USD-denominated account

Who Questrade suits

Questrade suits a trader who wants a long multi-market CFD list through the "Individual Forex & CFDs" account and accepts a wider spread as the trade-off. Questrade, Inc. is the CIRO dealer, and it is position 7 of 8 on this page. My view is that this brand fits you only if cost is not your priority: the advertised EUR/USD target spread is 1.9 pips, wider than OANDA's 0.6 pips typical, CMC Markets' 0.5 pips minimum, and FOREX.com's as low as 1.0 pips.

Pros & Cons
  • CFDs span forex, commodities, indices, and stock CFDs across Canadian, US, UK, European, Australian, and Hong Kong markets.
  • FX carries no commission: "Questrade is compensated for its services from the bid-ask spread."
  • "It costs $0 to open" an FX & CFD account.
  • The practice account runs 30 days with "$100,000 CAD virtual cash".
  • Complimentary training sessions follow account opening and funding.
  • The advertised EUR/USD target spread is 1.9 pips.
  • A risk capital limit set at account opening caps cumulative deposits to the FX account.
  • A bank partnered with Questrade is the liquidity provider and issuer of the CFDs, while Questrade, Inc. provides order execution.
Broker's Detail

Questrade, Inc. offers forex, commodity CFDs covering metals, energy, agriculture, softs, and live cattle, index CFDs across North America, EMEA, and Asia/Pacific, and stock CFDs from Canadian, US, UK, European, Australian, and Hong Kong markets. Gold and silver are also quoted as FX pairs. The advertised EUR/USD target spread is 1.9 pips, under a headline of "as low as 0.8 pips", with no FX commission, so your cost on that pair is the spread you see.

EUR/USD margin is 5% in a CAD-denominated account and 3% in a USD-denominated account. A risk capital limit approved at opening specifies the maximum you can deposit to the trading account cumulatively, and it can be revised with a financial update form. Gold CFD margin is 7.50%. Trading runs on Questrade Global for web, desktop, and mobile, and the 30-day practice account with "$100,000 CAD virtual cash" lets you try that platform first. My advice is to check your risk capital limit before you plan deposits.

Who Fortrade suits

A CIRO Temporary Order of November 9, 2022 bars Fortrade Canada Limited from opening any new client accounts and from seeking additional deposits into existing accounts, so this card is written for existing clients and for readers checking the firm's status. Fortrade is position 8 of 8. It suits an existing client who wants spread-based "Zero Commission" pricing across equities, FX, indices, commodities, and treasuries. My view is that you should read the order box before you weigh anything else here.

Pros & Cons
  • CFDs span equities, FX, indices, commodities including precious metals, energy, and agriculture, and treasuries.

CFDs at the 8 brands, side by side

OANDA names forex, indices, commodities, metals, and bonds, with no share CFDs, while FOREX.com, CMC Markets, AvaTrade, FXCM, and Questrade all include share CFDs in their Canadian lists (each firm’s Canadian product pages and documents, read September 26, 2026). Each EUR/USD margin is the firm’s own statement, and the margin you pay depends on your account’s base currency. I would compare the market list first, because it decides what you can trade at all. In my view, the margin rate matters most for the pair you trade most.

Gold CFDs at Canadian dealers

FXCM, AvaTrade, and Questrade name gold in their Canadian CFD lists. OANDA, FOREX.com, and Fortrade list metals, and CMC Markets and Plus500 list commodities. The margins vary widely, so I would check the instrument page before you trade gold anywhere. OANDA sets gold at 22% in a CAD account and 20% in a USD account. FOREX.com states the same XAU/USD pair, 22% and 20%. CMC Markets lists 6.03%. AvaTrade’s product guide gives gold 4.80%. Plus500 shows 6.46% initial margin, for 15:1. Questrade’s commodity CFD table sets gold at 7.50%. Fortrade shows 5.10%, or 20:1. FXCM states XAU/USD margin per minimum trade size, US$270 or C$370. In my opinion, the rate you should compare first is the one for your account’s base currency, because the CAD and USD figures differ at several firms.

Crypto CFDs at Canadian dealers

FXCM’s Canadian CFD product guide lists no crypto CFDs. CMC Markets’ Relationship Disclosure Document product list has no crypto. AvaTrade’s Canadian product guide has no crypto. Plus500’s Canadian Relationship Disclosure product list has no crypto. Fortrade’s Relationship Disclosure product list has no crypto. OANDA and FOREX.com list no crypto on the Canadian site, on the pages we read. CIPF’s Coverage Policy s.E.4 places crypto assets and crypto contracts outside CIPF coverage, while securities of a mutual fund or ETF that invests in or holds crypto assets remain eligible, so check what your property consists of. I would treat the product list, not the marketing pages, as the offer, and I would ask your dealer directly before you assume a crypto CFD is available.

Yes. The Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) describes itself as the national self-regulatory organization overseeing all investment dealers in Canada, and the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) is the umbrella organization of the provincial and territorial securities regulators. By their own statements, OANDA (Canada) Corporation ULC, GAIN Capital - FOREX.com Canada Ltd., CMC Markets Canada Inc., and Friedberg Mercantile Group Ltd. are registered investment dealers in every province and territory and derivatives dealers in Quebec. Plus500CA Ltd. and Fortrade Canada Limited state registration everywhere except Quebec; Questrade, Inc. states its derivatives are authorized by the AMF. In Alberta, OANDA does not accept residents, and CMC Markets, Plus500, and Fortrade take accredited investors only under NI 45-106, while FOREX.com requires Alberta residents to be accredited investors. IDPC Rules s.3962(5) requires dealer policies to prevent retail clients holding CFD positions over 0.5% of a public issuer’s float, and to prohibit CFDs conferring rights over the underlying or shareholder rights such as voting. I would confirm your status before you apply; in my view, your province decides your eligibility.

CFD leverage and margin in Canada

CIRO Bulletin 25-0232, effective August 13, 2025, sets the FX spot risk margin rates dealers must use with sections 5461 to 5469 of the IDPC Rules: euro 3.00% and U.S. dollar 2.00% in a CAD-base account, and euro 3.00% in a USD-base account. OANDA states 5% in a CAD account (20:1) and 3% in a USD account; FOREX.com and Questrade state the same percentages without a ratio. CMC Markets states 5%. Plus500 states 5.00% initial margin, or 20:1. Fortrade states 20:1 in CAD and 33:1 in USD. FXCM states US$370 or C$840 per 10K lot on EUR/USD. AvaTrade’s product guide shows 3.00% in a USD account. The 5% figure equals the euro 3.00% plus the U.S. dollar 2.00% (our arithmetic). CIRO sets minimums, and a dealer may require more. I would check your account’s base currency before you trade, because in my view the gap matters: 5% means a C$500 margin on your C$10,000 EUR/USD position.

The EUR/USD margin or leverage each firm states on its own Canadian pages, with the page and the date it was read.

What CFD trading costs at a Canadian dealer

OANDA advertises 0.6 pips for typical EUR/USD order sizes, spread-only, or a 0.0 pip minimum plus C$1 per 10,000 units on its core plan (C$10,000 balance to qualify). FOREX.com advertises spreads as low as 1.0 pips on Standard, or 0.0 pips plus US$7 per US$100,000 per side on RAW Pricing. AvaTrade’s product guide shows 0.6 pips, spread-only. Questrade advertises a target spread of 1.9 pips. Fortrade advertises an average spread of 2 pips. FXCM’s default pricing is spread-only, with no EUR/USD figure published in the rate card, the spread-costs page, or the EUR/USD page. I would add the spread and any commission together before you compare, because my rule of thumb is that a 0.0 pip minimum plus a commission can cost you more than a wider spread on your most-traded pair.

Opening a CFD account in Canada

OANDA has no minimum deposit on standard pricing, and CMC Markets states no minimum either. FOREX.com states “The minimum initial deposit required is at least $100.” Plus500 starts at C$100, and AvaTrade at C$300 for a CAD account or US$250 for a USD account. FXCM states an account minimum of 5,000 in your base currency. Questrade says it costs “$0 to open”, with a risk capital limit set at opening that caps your cumulative deposits. The firms ask for different things: OANDA takes Canadian residents with a SIN or a Canadian visa entry document; CMC Markets requires residents 18 or older who are not US persons; Questrade asks for government-issued ID, your SIN, and financial answers. Fortrade cannot open new client accounts under its Temporary Order. I would check the province table before you apply, since exclusions differ, and in my view the deposit minimum should be your last filter.

FAQs

Is CFD trading legal in Canada?
Yes. CIRO, the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization, oversees all investment dealers in Canada. OANDA (Canada) Corporation ULC, GAIN Capital - FOREX.com Canada Ltd., CMC Markets Canada Inc., and Friedberg Mercantile Group Ltd. each state registration as an investment dealer in every province and territory and as a derivatives dealer in Quebec. Plus500CA Ltd. and Fortrade Canada Limited state registration everywhere except Quebec. CIRO's IDPC Rules also restrict what CFDs a dealer may offer you, including a bar on CFDs that confer rights over the underlying share. I would confirm your own province with the firm before you apply.
Which CFD broker ranks first on your list for Canada?
OANDA, offered through OANDA (Canada) Corporation ULC, holds the highest score on our list. It offers CFDs on forex, indices, commodities, metals, and bonds, with no minimum deposit on standard pricing and a demo account that does not expire. Its EUR/USD margin is 5% in a CAD account and 3% in a USD account. I would start with it if its market list covers what you trade.
How can a beginner practise CFD trading in Canada?
Each of the eight brands on this page offers a demo account. OANDA's demo does not expire. FOREX.com gives "$50,000 in virtual funds", lasting 90 days on its own platforms. CMC Markets offers a demo with "$10,000 worth of virtual funds". Plus500 gives unlimited virtual funds with no time limit. FXCM provides "$50,000 of virtual money". Questrade's practice account runs for 30 days with C$100,000 virtual cash. In my view a demo is the right first step, because you learn the platform before you risk your money.
How risky is CFD trading?
Leverage is the core risk. A 20:1 EUR/USD position means 5% margin, so a move against you magnifies your loss. CIPF covers property a member firm holds for you, such as cash, if the firm becomes insolvent, but it does not cover losses from a drop in value, unsuitable investments, or poor advice. OANDA, Plus500, Fortrade, and Questrade operate on an order-execution-only basis, and FOREX.com is suitability exempt, so you decide whether each trade suits you. In my view, treat leverage as the first number you check.
What leverage do Canadian CFD dealers allow?
It follows your account's base currency and the pair. For EUR/USD, OANDA, FOREX.com, and Questrade state 5% margin in a CAD account, which is 20:1, and 3% in a USD account, which is 33.3:1. Plus500 states 5.00% initial margin, or 20:1, and Fortrade states 20:1 in CAD and 33:1 in USD. CIRO sets the minimum margin rates through its FX spot risk list, and a dealer may require more. I would check your own account's base currency before you compare.
