What trading Fortrade costs
One standard lot of EUR/USD on Fortrade's Real account costs US$20.00 for the round turn: 2 pips of spread (US$20.00), with no commission, on the average spread the Canadian site advertises rather than a figure we measured.
| Account | A month of trading | One round turn, 1 lot |
|---|---|---|
| Real2 pips, advertised, average (Canadian site, September 26, 2026) | US$400.00 | US$20.00 |
On Fortrade's Real account, a pip on EUR/USD is US$10.00 per standard lot, so a round turn costs the spread in pips times that, plus any commission.
Our verdict on Fortrade
I do not recommend a Fortrade Canada Limited account at this score. The firm suits a Canadian CFD trader who wants a small starting balance, since the minimum deposit is as little as C$100 with C$500 recommended, and who wants a CAD, USD or EUR base currency. You would hold your account with a CIRO dealer member, and those are the terms that fit.
The limit that matters most is the Temporary Order of November 9, 2022, which bars Fortrade Canada Limited from making recommendations, from opening new client accounts and from seeking additional deposits into existing accounts except to tell a client of a margin deficiency. Under the settlement it stays in effect until the fine, the costs and the complaint payments are satisfied and eligible clients are told of their right to claim on the fund. I would check for a CIRO notice lifting it before you go further.

Is Fortrade safe? CIRO membership, Fortrade Canada Limited
Yes, Fortrade Canada Limited is a CIRO dealer member and a current CIPF member, and the entity you contract with as a Canadian retail client is that firm. I read the CIRO dealer directory and the CIPF member list before anything else, and both list Fortrade Canada Limited.
CIRO registration and global licences
I read the CIRO dealer directory, which lists Fortrade Canada Limited as an Investment Dealer, and I read the CIPF member list, which shows it as a current CIPF member. Residents of Alberta must qualify as Accredited Investors, as defined in NI 45-106, to trade CFDs (Client Agreement, page 3, footnote 1). Fortrade Canada Limited was admitted to membership in IIROC, now the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO), effective January 30, 2020.
CIRO enforcement history
In Re Fortrade Canada Ltd., 2024 CIRO 36, CIRO accepted a settlement on February 21, 2024, with reasons on March 11, 2024. Fortrade Canada Limited admitted that between December 2020 and July 17, 2022 it made recommendations to clients contrary to Investment Dealer Rule 1400 through Client Managers or Support Representatives who were not Regulated Persons, and that between January 2020 and November 2022 it failed to keep a supervisory system reasonably designed to achieve compliance and failed to retain adequate records (Reasons, PDF pages 1 to 2; Settlement Agreement, printed page 14). The sanctions were a fine of $2,000,000, costs of $100,000, US$703,478.91 to clients with unresolved recommendation complaints, and a US$6,000,000 fund for eligible clients (Settlement Agreement, printed pages 14 to 15). A Temporary Order of November 9, 2022 bars Fortrade Canada Limited from making recommendations, from opening new client accounts and from seeking additional deposits into existing accounts except to tell a client of a margin deficiency (Appendix A, printed pages 16 to 17). Under the settlement the order stays in effect until the fine, the costs and the complaint payments are satisfied and eligible clients are told of their right to claim on the fund (Settlement Agreement, printed page 15). No notice lifting the Temporary Order was found in a search of ciro.ca on September 26, 2026. CIRO also issued an investor alert on September 26, 2025, saying that uTrader (utrader[.]ca) falsely claims affiliation with Fortrade Canada Limited and CIRO registration, and that uTrader has no affiliation with Fortrade Canada Limited and is not a CIRO Member.
Where a Canadian client’s money is held
Client money is segregated from Fortrade’s own money under the IDPC Rules. When I read the Client Agreement’s client money clauses, I confirmed that, other than the collateral or margin required to open CFD positions, all client money is held at a Schedule I bank in Canada regulated by OSFI. Wire deposits go to the Fortrade Canada Limited Client Trust Account at Royal Bank of Canada (Wire Transfer Form, page 1).
Who a Canadian client contracts with
Fortrade Canada Limited, at 1200 Waterfront Centre, 200 Burrard Street, Vancouver BC, is the dealer counterparty to every CFD trade, and the agreement says no other affiliated or third party entity is. For each client CFD it intends to enter an identical contract with its UK affiliate Fortrade Limited, which provides platform and support services and is not registered with any Canadian securities regulator as an investment dealer, so Canadian investor protections may not be available against it (Client Agreement, pages 3 to 4). The group’s other licences abroad, listed on the Canadian site’s footer, are Fortrade Ltd. (FCA, FRN 609970), Fort Securities Australia Pty Ltd (ASIC, AFSL 493520), Fortrade Cyprus Ltd. (CySEC), Fortrade Mauritius Ltd. (FSC Mauritius) and Fortrade (DIFC) Limited (DFSA, F009856). CIPF covers only accounts held at a CIRO member, so your account with any other entity, affiliates included, is not covered (CIPF Coverage Policy, s. C.2). Fortrade Canada Limited is on CIPF’s current member list, and neither Fortrade Limited nor any of the five licensed entities named above is on it.
How to complain, and who hears it
Written complaints go to [email protected] or the Compliance Department in Vancouver, supervised by a Designated Complaints Officer. Fortrade acknowledges within 5 business days and gives a substantive response within 90 calendar days (Complaints Procedure, printed pages 1 to 2).
Fortrade client money protection and dispute scheme
CIPF states its limit for an individual as $1 million for all general accounts combined, such as cash accounts, margin accounts, TFSAs and FHSAs, plus $1 million for all registered retirement accounts combined, plus $1 million for all RESPs combined where the client is the subscriber (About CIPF Coverage). I checked CIPF’s coverage page before writing this, and in practice, your general accounts share one limit, your registered retirement accounts share a second, and your RESPs, where you are the subscriber, share a third. It covers property a member firm holds for a client that is not returned after the firm’s insolvency. It does not cover a drop in the value of your investments, and claims carry a filing deadline after the insolvency. Fortrade Canada Limited is on CIPF’s current members list as an Investment Dealer member (https://www.cipf.ca/member-directory/current-cipf-members/fortrade-canada-limited).
The firm names the Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments (OBSI) as the dispute service, which considers complaints brought within 6 months of Fortrade’s response letter. The Complaints Procedure also names arbitration, a civil action, a complaint to CIRO (1-877-442-4322) and retaining a lawyer (Complaints Procedure, printed pages 2 to 3, step 5).

Fortrade spreads and commission
Fortrade publishes average spreads for its Real Account on the Canadian trading conditions page, with the currency data last updated June 18, 2026. The page states no unit for its spread figures, so I quote the numbers exactly as published. For the six CAD crosses on the page, EUR/CAD, GBP/CAD, AUD/CAD, CAD/CHF, CAD/JPY and NZD/CAD, the page publishes no average spread, so you have no published figure for those pairs (Trading conditions, Spreads and Conditions instrument rows).
Real Account
The firm publishes a EUR/USD average spread of 2 pips (Trading conditions, Spreads and Conditions, EUR/USD row). Its home page advertises zero commission and states that other fees apply (Fortrade Canada home page, Zero Commission panel). The published averages for other pairs are GBP/USD 3, USD/JPY 2.5, USD/CAD 2.8 and AUD/USD 3.
What it costs to trade with Fortrade
One lot of EUR/USD, 100,000 units, costs US$20 in spread per round turn at the firm’s published average, about $27.98 at USD/CAD 1.3988 (derived from the trading conditions page and the site’s rates file dated September 18, 2026). When you trade a standard lot, that is what the spread takes from your round turn.
Other fees a Canadian trader should check
The inactivity fee is US$10, deducted the day after 180 consecutive days without a trade and then every 30 days until trading resumes, the funds are withdrawn or the balance is zero; the FAQ says it is charged in the account’s currency (Relationship Disclosure, page 5, s. G, Inactivity or Dormancy Fees). A currency conversion fee applies to amounts not in the account’s base currency, at a rate Fortrade sets; the amount is not published. A daily swap or rollover charge applies to positions held overnight, charged three times on Wednesdays (Relationship Disclosure, pages 4 to 5, s. G; the Client Agreement’s currency conversion clause). Fortrade publishes no deposit or withdrawal fee of its own, and according to the wire form the transaction fee varies with the client’s bank (What fees and charges will a client incur?, FAQ; Wire Transfer Form, page 1).
Fortrade funding methods and withdrawal times
A Canadian account is funded by credit and debit cards, bank transfers, Gigadat, Interac and alternative and local payment providers, the methods the firm’s FAQ answer tags for CIRO clients. I group the routes below so you can match them to your bank and your payment habits.
Deposit methods
The wire transfer minimum is $250, and the bank account name must match the Fortrade account (Wire Transfer Form, page 1 notes). Wire deposits are usually credited within 7 business days (What payment methods are accepted?, FAQ).
Withdrawals
Withdrawals are requested in the app and go back to the original payment method. Card withdrawals are limited to the amount deposited, with the rest sent by wire. A bank transfer withdrawal takes up to 5 business days and a card refund up to 15 business days (How long do withdrawals take?, FAQ).
Fortrade account types and minimum deposit
Fortrade Canada offers a Demo Account and a Real Account. A swap-free account is available on request for clients of the Muslim faith. Accounts are individual or joint, with corporate accounts generally not accepted, so you open yours as an individual or jointly (What types of accounts can I open with Fortrade?, Account management FAQ; Relationship Disclosure, page 3, s. C).
Minimum deposit
The minimum deposit is as little as C$100, with C$500 recommended. The same figures apply in USD or EUR by base currency (Is there a minimum deposit?, FAQ).
Account currencies
The base currency is CAD, USD or EUR, subject to change at Fortrade’s discretion (Client Agreement, page 13).
Fortrade trading platforms
Fortrade’s platform is its own, offered as a web application and a mobile app for iOS and Android, with a demo account holding $10,000 in virtual funds (About us; home page). You run your trades in the firm’s own software, in a browser or on your phone. No Fortrade Canada page read lists MetaTrader, cTrader or TradingView (About us, https://www.fortrade.com/en-ca/about-us/).
Fortrade execution speed and slippage
Execution speed was not measured for this dealer. This page states no fill time, and no slippage figure is available for Fortrade Canada Limited.
Fortrade markets
Fortrade Canada offers CFDs only, on equities, FX, indices, commodities and treasuries, and you do not own the underlying assets (Relationship Disclosure, page 1, s. A). The Canadian trading conditions page lists 429 instruments: 355 stock CFDs, 32 currency pairs, 20 commodities, 19 indices and 3 US Treasuries, counted from the page data. I checked the product list for crypto CFDs and found none: the relationship disclosure’s product list has none, and the instrument data has no crypto category (Relationship Disclosure, page 1, s. A).
Fortrade leverage and margin for Canadian clients
The firm states EUR/USD initial margin of 5.2% in a CAD account, and the firm labels EUR/USD leverage 33:1 in a USD account, where the initial margin is 3.0%. USD/CAD carries 2.2% in both account currencies, the highest forex leverage on the page (Trading conditions, Currencies instrument data). Your base currency changes the margin you post on the same pair, so compare both columns before you choose one. On other markets, the firm states initial margin of 10% on the US indices and Canada 60, 15% on 13 other indices, 5.10% on gold, and 30% on 330 stock CFDs.
Under section 5460(1) of CIRO’s Investment Dealer and Partially Consolidated Rules, the client margin Fortrade Canada Limited must collect on a foreign exchange position is the sum of spot risk margin and term risk margin, with sections 5461 to 5463, 5468 and 5469 also applying. CIRO Bulletin 25-0232, effective August 13, 2025, lists spot risk margin rates of 3.00% for the euro in CAD-base and USD-base accounts and 2.00% for the US dollar in a CAD-base account. The Client Agreement’s risk warning says a client can lose all, but not more than, the balance of the client account (Client Agreement, page 1).
How Fortrade compares to Plus500 and CMC Markets
Plus500CA Ltd. carries a published score of 58.8 out of 100 on a global basis in our comparison. Its fees page gives an illustrative EUR/USD example of a 0.6 pip market spread, with spread only and no commission, and live spreads are shown in the platform.
CMC Markets Canada Inc. carries a published score of 64.6 out of 100 on a global basis. Its Standard account has a EUR/USD minimum spread of 0.5 with no separate FX commission, and its FX Active account has spreads from 0.0 pips on six majors plus commission of $2.50 per lot per side. Our Plus500 review for Canadian traders and our CMC Markets review for Canadian traders apply the same CIRO dealer checks to those firms.
Should you open a Fortrade account?
No, I do not recommend opening a Fortrade Canada account. The Temporary Order kept in effect under the CIRO settlement bars Fortrade Canada from opening new client accounts, and I treat that as decisive for you as a new Canadian client. A trader who already holds an account keeps the order-execution-only service, with no advice or recommendations from the firm.
That enforcement record is what I weigh first at any dealer, and it is the reason my answer is no. Before you deposit, check the CIRO dealer directory entry for Fortrade Canada Limited and any CIRO notice about the Temporary Order on ciro.ca. Your next step is those two checks, and I would make them at any dealer on the list.
