On this FXCM review page, the abbreviation CIRO is spelled out to the regulator's full name, the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization.
Our verdict on FXCM
I would send a Canadian trader with a larger balance and an appetite for a wide market range to Friedberg Direct powered by FXCM. The range of markets score is 10 out of 10, the highest category score the firm carries, and the Active Trader account cuts the advertised EUR/USD spread to 0.20 pips for the volume that qualifies. The published score is 68.6 out of 100, from our global broker test, and the firm ranks 2 of 9 in our rated Canadian set.
The limit for me is cost at the entry level. The standard account's advertised EUR/USD spread is 0.80 pips at market close, a CAD wire withdrawal costs $25, and the conversion mark-up runs as high as 150 pips on small amounts. The $5,000 minimum deposit, in the account's base currency, also narrows who can start here at all.
Pros
- Card deposits may be instantly available, with card funding from 50 to 20,000 of the base currency per calendar month.
- Withdrawals are processed within one to two business days whenever possible.
- The Active Trader account includes free API access, market depth and complimentary VPS hosting.
- Accounts run in CAD and USD, with wire deposits accepted in both currencies.
- No province is excluded on the FXCM Canadian site.
Cons
- A CAD bank wire withdrawal costs $25 to a bank in Canada and $40 to a bank outside Canada, and on a USD account it costs US$25 to a bank in the U.S. and US$40 to an account outside the U.S.
- The USD/CAD conversion mark-up runs from 150 pips on amounts under $10,000 down to 10 pips on $100,000 or more.
- A dormant account pays the lesser of 50 units of the base currency ($50 on a CAD account) or the remaining balance after 12 months without trading.
- The account minimum for any new account is 5,000 units of the base currency, so a CAD account needs $5,000.

How popular is FXCM in Canada?
Canadians made 440 branded searches for FXCM in August 2026, placing it 7th of the 7 CIRO dealers we rate. Search interest measures how much attention FXCM draws, and it says nothing about quality; the score above is our review verdict.

How this is measured
Google Ads reports each month how many people in Canada searched FXCM's brand terms, and the card ranks the dealers on that figure alone.
A search term counts for FXCM only where its own website holds the first organic Google result for the term in Canada, and bare brand words that any company could own are left out.
A month-over-month change appears for FXCM only when the month before crossed 1,000 searches, since Google rounds volumes below that level.
The card's figures update on the 15th of every month with the latest month Google has released, and the first-result check for FXCM runs again each quarter.
Is FXCM safe? CIRO membership, Friedberg Mercantile Group Ltd.
Yes, I consider FXCM safe for a Canadian retail account, because your contract is with Friedberg Mercantile Group Ltd., an Investment Dealer in the CIRO dealer directory and a current CIPF member (CIRO dealer directory, read September 26, 2026). The directory prints the legal name and the category, Investment Dealer, and prints no status, date or registration number.
CIRO registration and global licences
The firm states that Friedberg Mercantile Group Ltd. is “a registered investment dealer in all of the provinces and territories of Canada, a derivatives dealer in Quebec”, and a member of CIRO and CIPF (About FMGL, friedbergdirect.ca). I read the Canadian site and no province is excluded; its footer states “Derivatives offered to Quebec residents are authorized by the Quebec AMF” (FXCM Canada home page). The head office is 220 Bay Street, Suite 600, Toronto, Ontario M5J 2W4 (Charges and Fees rate card).
CIRO enforcement history
There is one entry. Re Friedberg Mercantile Group, 2022 IIROC 09 settled a proceeding over the dealer’s failure to review and approve client accounts migrated from AVA Trade Ltd. adequately or on time, failure to maintain an adequate compliance system and written procedures to supervise AVA Trade client accounts and trading on the AVA Trade platform, and failure to supervise AVA Trade agents, from October 2018 to December 2020, contrary to IIROC Dealer Member Rules 38.1 and 38.2 and IIROC Rule 3200. The decision is dated March 29, 2022, with reasons April 13, 2022, and the settlement carried a fine of $223,000 and costs of $25,000 (CIRO enforcement proceeding). I searched CIRO’s enforcement proceedings for “FXCM” and got no proceeding; the search for “Friedberg” returned this settlement. I did not search CanLII or the provincial commissions, so I claim nothing from them.
Where a Canadian client’s money is held
Your wire deposits are sent to Friedberg Mercantile Group Ltd., and the bank details appear only inside MyFXCM (Deposit Funds page). The Friedberg Direct section of the relationship disclosure does not say where Forex and CFD client cash is held or whether it is segregated or held in trust.
Who a Canadian client contracts with
The FXCM brand in Canada is “Friedberg Direct powered by FXCM technology”. Friedberg Direct is a division of Friedberg Mercantile Group Ltd., and all accounts are opened by and held with Friedberg Direct. Friedberg Direct is generally the counterparty to your trade, so you buy from and sell to Friedberg Direct, which offsets its risk with liquidity providers, and the service is order-execution-only (Relationship Disclosure Information). The site footer says Friedberg Direct clears trades through a subsidiary within the Stratos group of companies and that “Stratos Group does not own or control any part of Friedberg Direct”. The same dealer runs the AvaTrade brand in Canada as “Friedberg Direct powered by AvaTrade technology”. CIPF covers only accounts held at a CIRO member, and an account with any other entity, affiliates and related organizations included, is not covered (CIPF Coverage Policy, s. C.2). Friedberg Mercantile Group Ltd. is on CIPF’s current member list, and no Stratos Group company and no company named FXCM is on it.
How to complain, and who hears it
You send complaints to the Complaints Officer at [email protected] or to the head office on 1-800-461-2700, and account complaints go in writing (Relationship Disclosure Information). A complaint not resolved within 5 business days gets a letter explaining how it will be handled, and a written response follows no more than 90 days after the complaint is received.
This page covers Friedberg Mercantile Group Ltd., the Canadian dealer, and our FXCM review covers the brand worldwide.
FXCM client money protection and dispute scheme
CIPF’s limits for an individual are “$1 million for all general accounts combined (such as cash accounts, margin accounts, TFSAs and FHSAs)”, plus a separate $1 million limit for all registered retirement accounts combined and a separate $1 million limit for all RESPs combined (About CIPF coverage). When a member firm becomes insolvent and does not return property it holds for a client, CIPF covers that property, though the value of the property itself is never guaranteed. I read the CIPF member list and Friedberg Mercantile Group Ltd. appears on it as a current member.
I also read the relationship disclosure, which names CIRO’s complaint and arbitration processes and CIRO’s brochure “An Investor’s Guide to Making a Complaint” (Relationship Disclosure Information, Section 4.8, pp. 26 to 27). The CIRO complaints brochure linked in the footer of every FXCM Canadian page names OBSI, which takes your complaint within 180 days of the firm’s response, recommends compensation up to $350,000, and whose decisions are currently not legally binding. CIRO arbitration is final and binding, with awards up to $500,000.

FXCM spreads and commission, measured
I separate what we measured from what the firm advertises, because on this page the two sit close together and you deserve to know which is which.
Standard
Our global broker test measured EUR/USD at 0.93 pips on a standard account, over 30 hours from 9:00 on March 14, 2026 to 14:00 on March 15, 2026 (UTC+10); the test does not name the entity measured, so it is not a measurement of the Canadian dealer. The firm advertises an EUR/USD “Spread” of 0.80 pips in its Active Trader pricing table, a time-stamped snapshot at market close last updated September 25, 2026, not an average. Accounts generally default to a pricing model where the opening and closing fees are built into the spread with no additional charge; commission pricing applies only to accounts the firm designates in a written notice, for EUR/USD at CAD 7.00 per 100k per side on a CAD account and US$5.00 per 100k per side on a USD account (Charges and Fees rate card).
Active Trader
The same market-close snapshot advertises an EUR/USD “ATG Spread” of 0.20 pips. Active Trader Tier 1 needs USD 25,000 in equity.
What it costs to trade with FXCM
What a trade costs you depends on the pricing model the firm assigns. On the default model the opening and closing fees sit inside the spread, so you pay no separate commission unless the firm designates your account in writing (Charges and Fees rate card, which I read in full). A finance charge, credit or debit, applies to trades held past 5 PM EST, at rates shown in the Trading Station Dealing Rates window, and the EUR/USD finance-charge mark-up is 35%.
Other fees a Canadian trader should check
Deposits by wire or card are free, and card withdrawals are free. A CAD bank wire withdrawal costs $25 to a bank in Canada and $40 to a bank outside Canada. A USD account pays US$25 for a bank in the U.S. and US$40 for an account outside the U.S., so a USD wire to your Canadian bank falls in the US$40 tier. A dormant account fee of the lesser of $50 on a CAD account (US$50 on a USD account) or the remaining balance applies after no trading activity in a 12-month period. The USD/CAD conversion mark-up by amount falls from 150 pips on the smallest amounts to 10 pips on 100,000 or more. VPS hosting costs $30 a month on a CAD account, and the Active Trader page says it comes complimentary with an Active Trader account.
FXCM funding methods and withdrawal times
You fund a Canadian account by bank wire in CAD or USD, sent to Friedberg Mercantile Group Ltd., or by credit or debit card through MyFXCM (Deposit Funds page). Friedberg Direct accepts funds in USD and CAD. I found no cash option, no branch deposits, no internal transfers, no third-party funds, and no prepaid or gift cards.
Deposit methods
Your card deposit is capped at 20,000 of the base currency per calendar month. Card deposits may be instantly available. Wire deposits take about one to two business days domestically and three to five business days internationally, often less, and are generally credited to your trading account within one business day after they reach the firm’s bank.
Withdrawals
Withdrawals go by bank wire and card refund only, and card withdrawals are limited to the amount you deposited by card. The firm processes withdrawals within one to two business days whenever possible. Domestic bank wires take about 1 to 2 business days and international wires 3 to 5, often less. Card refunds take from five business days to one billing cycle, about thirty days.
FXCM account types and minimum deposit
You open a default spread-only account, and commission pricing applies only where the firm designates it in writing (Charges and Fees rate card). An Active Trader account brings dedicated support, free API access, market depth, and a complimentary VPS. Corporate, partnership, and trust accounts are available.
Minimum deposit
I checked the Deposit Funds page before writing this. The account minimum for any new account is 5,000, in your account’s base currency, so CAD 5,000 or USD 5,000 (Deposit Funds page).
Account currencies
Your account runs in CAD or USD. The rate card and the margin sheets carry USD and CAD base-currency columns.
FXCM trading platforms
You trade on Trading Station (web, desktop, and Trading Station Mobile), MetaTrader 4, or TradingView, where you open an account with Friedberg Direct powered by FXCM and trade from TradingView charts (FXCM Canada home page). API trading runs through FIX, ForexConnect, and Java APIs, with free API access on an Active Trader account.
FXCM execution speed and slippage
We did not measure execution speed for this dealer, and I state no fill time. Our global broker test of the brand did not record one for the Canadian entity, so you get no speed claim from me here.
FXCM markets
I counted 42 currency pairs in the rows of the Friedberg Direct margin sheets (Margin requirements, CAD account). The Canadian CFD product guide dated September 14, 2026 lists 11 index CFDs, 8 energy CFDs, 6 soft commodity CFDs, 7 metal CFDs including XAU/USD and XAG/USD, and 9 treasury and interest-rate CFDs (CFD Product Guide). The single-share CFD list has 298 symbols, 211 regular-hours listings plus 87 24-hour duplicates of US shares, across the USA, Hong Kong, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands, and all shares are priced in USD. The guide and the share list name no crypto CFD, so you have no crypto CFD to trade here.
FXCM leverage and margin for Canadian clients
The firm’s margin sheets set EUR/USD margin at CAD 840 and USD 370, and USD/CAD margin at USD 200, per 10K lot, which is 50:1, the highest forex leverage on the USD sheet, with liquidation at 10% of the requirement (Margin requirements, CAD sheet dated August 28, 2026, and USD sheet). The firm states “At Friedberg Direct, margin requirements are derived from rates published by CIRO” (Forex and CFD leverage page). Its TradingView page says leverage “is set by Canadian regulator (~33:1)” and varies for each instrument.
CIRO’s margin rule is IDPC Rules section 5460(1): the minimum client account margin for a foreign exchange position is the spot risk margin plus the term risk margin, with the spot risk margin rate set for each currency group and raised by a surcharge when a currency’s volatility runs above its group’s threshold, and section 5468(1) applies this to client accounts (CIRO Investment Dealer and Partially Consolidated Rules). CIRO Rules Bulletin, effective August 13, 2025, sets the spot risk margin rate for the euro at 3.00% in both CAD-base and USD-base accounts, and for the U.S. dollar at 2.00% in a CAD-base account and the Canadian dollar at 2.00% in a USD-base account. I read the rule text and the bulletin before writing this, and I would treat the margin sheets as the figure that governs your positions.
How FXCM compares to AvaTrade and OANDA
AvaTrade scores 64.5 out of 100 on the same global basis as FXCM’s score, and its Canadian pricing is spread-only: “AvaTrade does not charge commissions on any trade”, with a fixed-spread option referenced in its product materials. You can read the Canadian detail in our AvaTrade review for Canadian traders, which covers the same CIRO dealer framework as this page.
OANDA (Canada) Corporation ULC is the second CIRO dealer in this comparison. Its standard account is spread-only, with “0.6 pips for typical EUR/USD order sizes” on its platform page. Its Core account pairs a minimum spread of 0 with a commission of CAD$1 per 10,000 units. Our OANDA review for Canadian traders covers the same CIRO dealer framework as this page.

Should you open an FXCM account?
Yes, I would open an FXCM account if you want a CIRO dealer with a wide range of markets and you can meet the account minimum. You can see how it sits among forex brokers in Canada on our Canadian page.
The limit to weigh before you deposit is the account minimum, along with the funding and conversion fees in the rate card. Before depositing, check the CIRO dealer directory entry for Friedberg Mercantile Group Ltd. and read the Charges and Fees rate card on the firm’s Canadian site.
