OANDA is our Top CFTC-Regulated Broker

OANDA provides an extensive range of currency pairs (and cryptos) with low trading costs via its Standard account. When trading with this account, you can choose from 3 core trading platforms (OANDA Trade, MT4 and TradingView) and 3 third-party platforms (MultiCharts, CQG FX and Motivewave), meaning they have solutions if trading style leaves to analysis, charting or automation.

Our team put OANDA through our comprehensive methodology to review the broker, which includes going through our thorough 80-point check to score each broker based on their services. From this test, we scored OANDA, a strong score of 92/100. This is an excellent score, placing them in the top ten brokers worldwide and number in North America, making it an obvious choice to recommend.

Key Strengths:

  • Excellent third-party trading tools, including AutoChartist, for free
  • Low spreads from one pip
  • 6 trading platforms are available
  • Crypto trading is available

OANDA Offers a Simple Trading Account

Most brokers make you choose between trading accounts, which can be confusing for beginners. OANDA removes some of the difficulty by limiting your options to a single, spread-only Standard account. Spreads start as low as 0.6 pips, with the average for major currency pairs hovering around 1.2. When you take into account that you pay only the spread to execute each trade and aren’t required to put down a minimum deposit, these are competitive compared to the other brokers in this guide. When I tested OANDA, the lowest currency pair was EUR/USD at 1.4 pips and USD/AUD at 1.2.

What I like about the standard account is that it simplifies your trading costs because all you pay is the one-off spread when entering a trade. The standard account is an ideal trading account if you are a beginner because you don’t have to worry about paying extra commissions.

Trade Forex and Cryptocurrency with OANDA

OANDA allows you to trade with 68 currency pairs, an extensive range that includes majors, minors, and exotic pairs. This gives you a solid choice of forex pairs if you want to trade other pairs outside of the majors. If you prefer to trade Cryptos, OANDA has a partnership with PAXOS that gives you access to the PAXOS ItBit crypto exchange. Here, you can access popular tokens like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin.

OANDA also allows you to enlarge your positions with leverage, you can trade at 50:1 if you’ve got the mettle for it.

Reduced Trading Costs with Elite Trader Program

If you’re a high-volume forex trader, then you’ll benefit from OANDA’s Elite Trader Program. This program offers a range of benefits, such as a dedicated relationship manager, discounted TradingView subscriptions, and invites to VIP events.

oanda elite trader program us

However, the standout benefit of joining the Elite Trader Program is that they provide a rebate based on your trading volume. This can save you up to 34% in trading costs. So if you trade on volume, then this program will make OANDA one of the lowest-cost brokers in our list.

OANDA Trade is Best For Third-party Tools

OANDA Trade is the broker’s proprietary trading platform and an excellent choice if you’re just starting out with trading. It has a user-friendly interface, which makes it easy to navigate and execute your trades. Other features, you’ll appreciate regardless of your level of trading experience include the broker’s tutorials and guides on how to develop a strategy and manage your risk.

If you like analytical tools, you’ll find a lot to like with the charting functionality of TradingView third-party tools like AutoChartist and Technical Analysis. I like the AutoChartist tool because it scans the markets frequently to find trades for you automatically, then alerts you if a potential trade is upcoming based on chart formations.

TradingView is Great for Forex Screeners

TradingView is known for its industry-leading charting package. With over 110+ trading indicators and advanced drawing tools, it has everything you could possibly want to plot your trades.

Personally, I like TradingView for its technical analysis scanner. You can use it to scan the forex market based on any technical analysis metric, and it will filter the currency pairs based on whether they match your criteria or not. This is useful if you use candlestick patterns to trade, because you can search forex pairs based on candlesticks that have formed. This makes analyzing the markets much faster.

Platforms with OANDA US

Given that MetaTrader 4 the worlds most popular trading platform, there is a good reason we consider the platform to be a solid choice. With this platform you will more than enough tools for successful trading: features include 23 analytical objects, 30 built-in technical indicators and 9 timeframes. If this isn’t enough, you can create your own indicators and even algos for automation via Expert Advisors (EAs).

To ensure you have the richest possible trading experience with MT4, OANDA gives you access to their order book with the premium Open Order Indicator. I think this is an excellent tool because it shows where the highest concentration of OANDA clients’ orders are, giving you areas of liquidity to trade within.

Third-party Trading Tools

OANDA offers MotiveWave, which is a useful tool if you use Eliott Waves to time your trades. This package includes automatic Elliott Wave analysis on your charts, making it simple to find the next wave.

Other third-party tools include CQG FX, which provides professional-level charting (10 chart types), analytics (100+ indicators) and fast order execution tools. And Multicharts, which has backtesting, automation and charting features that other platforms are missing.

Our Verdict on OANDA

The combination of competitive pricing, advanced trading platforms, and versatile trading tools is why OANDA tops our list of the best forex brokers in the USA. The mobile trading app provides institutional-grade execution on the go, making it perfect for active traders who need flexibility. Just be mindful that the range of markets is somewhat limited, as discussed earlier, and they only offer a spread-only account. If you’re looking for an ECN account, consider the broker review below.

TastyFX also provides a variety of educational materials, such as webinars, tutorials, and how-to guides, to help traders build their skills and confidence. With all these features combined, TastyFX is a natural choice as the best broker for beginner forex traders.

Pros & cons
  • Worlds largest broker

Tastyfx has an easy-to-use Trading Platform

The forex trading platform developed by tastyfx is ideal for beginners. It has all the basics without distractions in a visually appealing platform, with built-in trading signals to help find new trade ideas. They also set up the Learn Center, which can help you find step-by-step instructions on trading forex, navigating markets, and managing your risk. With all of the novice-friendly offers, it makes tastyfx an easy choice as our top choice for beginner traders.

Key Strengths:

  • Simple trading platform with fast executions
  • Competitive spreads from 0.8 pips
  • Low minimum deposit

Simplified Trading Accounts and Products from tastyfx

Tastyfx now offers three live account types. The Standard account has a spread-only pricing model, which means you do not pay any commission on tastyfx. Spreads start as low as 0.8 pips on EUR/USD. This account is ideal for beginners because all the trading costs are in the one-off spread when entering the markets.

The Zero+ account provides spreads from 0.0 pips with a $5 commission per lot for active traders. The Prime account offers spreads from 0.6 pips for traders with $50K+ deposits, along with up to 8% APY on cash. This makes tracking your trading fees simple, which is helpful when you are just starting.

The NFA regulates tastyfx in the United States, which allows them to provide 1:50 leverage on their majors and 1:20 leverage on their minor pairs.

They also offer a wide range of forex pairs. With over 80+ currency pairs to trade, tastyfx is a popular choice for forex traders who like to trade outside the major pairs. I found it unusual that they only offered forex markets, so no commodities, futures, or options. It would be nice if they provided more markets.

Tastyfx’s Platforms are User-Friendly

Tastyfx’s proprietary forex trading platform is very well-designed and easy to use. Although it doesn’t have the most advanced technical indicators and drawing tools, it does have the most popular ones. For example, Fibonacci retracement tools and moving averages (MAS). You’ll find over 30 indicators and 20 drawing tools on the platform so it is by no means a basic platform.

What I like about the platform is they have their in-built Trading Signals on the platform. AutoChartist and PIAFirst provide these signals, and both have decades of experience providing trading signals. Which is helpful if you are a beginner to watch and read these signals so you can learn how the professionals do it in real time.

FOREX.com has Tight Spreads on 80+ Forex Pairs

We like FOREX.com for its range of 80+ forex pairs with competitive spreads with two different types of trading accounts, one with commission costs and one with spreads only. To help you trade, the broker allows you to choose from an impressive range of trading platforms complemented with free trading tools.

Key Strengths

  • Automated trading with Capitalise.ai (with FOREX.com account)
  • Free trading ideas generators with SMART Signals and Trading Central
  • Low trading fees
  • 80+ forex pairs to trade from

FOREX.com Offers Two Tight Spread Accounts

Different trading accounts suit different types of trading styles so we think it is good that FOREX.com allow you to choose the account for your trading strategy.

Standard and MetaTrader Accounts

The standard account is a solid option if you’re looking for a straightforward forex trading experience. This account has competitive spreads starting from 1.2 pips on EUR/USD, and you won’t need to pay a commission in addition to the spread.

To use this account you will need to choose between the FOREX.com, TradingView, MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 trading platforms.

RAW Pricing Account

On the other hand, if you’re an active trader seeking tight spreads, then the Raw Pricing account may be a better fit. Spreads start from 0.0 pips on EUR/USD forex pair, but you’ll pay a commission of $14 round-turn per lot traded. This account is only available with FOREX.com trading platform.

The best ECN brokers on the RAW account gives institutional traders direct market access with transparent execution and minimal markup on interbank spreads.

Since you pay the commission separately to the spread, you get greater transparency with this account and this is one of the reasons it is popular with scalpers.

Regardless of which FOREX.com account you choose, you’ll have access to all of its trading products. This broker has an impressive range of currency pairs, with over 80 crosses available. In fact, it’s one of the top brokers in terms of the variety and quantity of forex pairs. You also get access to the unleveraged gold and silver markets.

Both trading accounts also benefit from the 1:50 leverage provided by FOREX.com. However, if you want to use less leverage, you can request FOREX.com to lower it on your account.

You Get Excellent Free Trading Tools and Platforms with FOREX.com

We’re impressed with what FOREX.com offers in terms of trading platforms and tools. The broker’s own platform makes executing trades directly on FOREX.com simple and intuitive with a user-friendly interface. Alternatively, scalpers can trade with old standby MetaTrader 4 (and MetaTrader 5)and its on-chart one-click execution feature. If you want an extensive range of trading indicators and drawing tools, there’s TradingView. Lastly, we should mention the availability of Capitalise.ai which allows you to automate your trading without knowing any code.

FOREX.com also shines when it comes to free trading tools that enhance your trading experience. If you are a day trader, finding consistent opportunities can be challenging, so you could benefit from FOREX.com’s SMART Signals and Trading Central. Both tools scan the markets, finding price action patterns that are ready to trade when they appear in the dashboard.

Institutional Trading Tools

FOREX.com lets you access their services through an API using REST endpoints, letting you automate your trades directly with the broker. This is one of the fastest ways to get pricing streams and execute your trades, saving you milliseconds to help you secure the best pricing.

Another benefit is that you can use any coding language like C# or Python to generate automated trading strategies and use FOREX.com’s API endpoints to execute the trades. This allows for more sophisticated trading strategies that other trading languages like MQL4 and Pine Script can’t handle.

VIP Account Rebates

If you can get set up with a VIP account, you can get access to institutional-like trading costs and services.

Lower costs are driven by FOREX.com’s rebate program, which can net you up to $10 rebate per million traded. If you can trade $1 billion a month, you get the max rebate and earn over $10,000/month in rebates, helping offset your trading costs.

Lower tiers are available as you can see below:

Our Verdict on FOREX.com

Overall, FOREX.com has some of the tightest spreads available in the United States from 0.0 pips. In addition, you can choose from a generous range of trading platforms and access free tools to help you find trades faster. All in all, this makes FOREX.com my top pick for tight spreads.

Interactive Brokers Offers Low Trading Fees for Active Traders

Interactive Brokers provides a sophisticated trading service that would suit an experienced trader who wants low trading fees. They can access a wide range of markets with low commissions, making Interactive Brokers our standout low-fee trading broker.

Key Strengths:

  • Large selection of assets to trade
  • Top financial market research and educational tools
  • Low trading costs

Interactive Brokers has low fee Trading Accounts

The IBKR Lite account is Interactive Brokers’ “standard” account for retail traders. Interactive Brokers gets its pricing from 17 FX dealers, so you’ll enjoy the benefits of low spreads from 0.1 pips on the EUR/USD. You have to pay a commission with each trade, which is between 0.08 to 0.20 basis points. What you pay depends on your trading volume.

You should choose Interactive Brokers if you are a trader that trades large positions (at least one lot or more). The reason is that there is a minimum of $2.00 commission per trade on the forex market. So if you want to trade micro-lots or mini-lots, you’ll be paying $2 at each entry and exit ($4 per round-turn), making it expensive. However, if you trade one lot or more, then they provide one of the lowest fees, so you should take advantage of this.

With the low fees, you can take advantage of the markets that Interactive Brokers offer. IB offers over 100 currency pairs, trade options on over 30+ markets, invest in stocks in 90+ markets, and trade futures in 30+ global markets.

How to Choose a Forex Broker in US?

1. Look for US Regulation

If you’re a U.S.-based trader, it’s essential to choose a broker that is properly regulated in the United States. Only brokers that are registered with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and are members of the National Futures Association (NFA) are legally allowed to offer forex trading services to U.S. residents.

Important U.S. Trading Restrictions:

  • CFDs Are Not Permitted: U.S. regulations prohibit brokers from offering Contracts for Difference (CFDs) to retail clients. U.S. traders can only access spot forex and regulated futures markets.
  • No Offshore Brokers: Due to the Dodd-Frank Act, American citizens are generally not allowed to open accounts with offshore or unregulated brokers, even if those brokers accept international clients.
  • Leverage Limits and Margin Rules: U.S. brokers must also comply with strict leverage caps (typically 50:1 for major pairs and 20:1 for minors) and mandatory margin call and stop-out rules.

Tip: If you’re a U.S. trader, always confirm that the broker complies with both CFTC and NFA requirements-this ensures legal protection, financial transparency, and a higher level of client fund security.

regulation slider image

2. Look out for Trading Costs

You can decide to trade on a commission-based or a commission-free account, and many brokers offer both. The commission-free account is sometimes known as a Standard account. As you’d expect, there’s no commission to pay for trading on this. This is the most common account on offer in the US.

Less common is the commission-based account sometimes known as a Raw account. This account uses ECN or STP processing to connect you directly to liquidity markets for the lowest spreads. As the broker won’t make anything from the spread, they’ll charge you a commission.

fees cost slider image

3. Pick the Best Trading Software

Choosing the right trading platform is key to a smooth trading experience. The best platform for you depends on your trading style, the tools you need, and how you prefer to access the markets.

MetaTrader 4 (MT4) remains a top choice for forex traders who value a simple, reliable platform with support for automated trading through Expert Advisors (EAs).

TradingView has surged in popularity, especially in the U.S., thanks to its intuitive interface, advanced charting, social trading features, and easy access via web browsers and mobile apps. It’s an excellent choice for visual traders and those who value a collaborative environment.

MetaTrader 5 (MT5) offers more timeframes and asset classes compared to MT4, making it a solid option for traders looking to branch out beyond forex into futures or commodities.

Many brokers also offer their own proprietary platforms, which may include built-in tools, unique features, or seamless account integration.

Before committing, test the platform using a demo account to ensure it suits your strategy, whether you prefer manual trading, automation, or copy trading.

trading platform

4. Find the Markets You Need

All the brokers we cover offer forex trading, but they will usually offer other instruments as well. For example, the broker may allow you to open positions on ETFs, mutual funds, stocks, cryptocurrencies, and more.

Before you sign up for a broker, check to make sure they provide the exact markets you want to trade. Consider those you might be interested in in the future too.

market slider image

5. Check the Broker Let’s You Trade How You Want

While all brokers in the US provide access to the spot forex market, some may also have a selection of additional products to complement your trading strategy.

Depending on the broker, you may also be able to trade:

  • Precious metals like gold and silver
  • Futures contracts, including forex, commodities, or indices
  • Options on selected markets
  • Equities and ETFs through affiliated or full-service platforms

Larger firms like Charles Schwab may provide access to a wider product range, including stocks, ETFs, and mutual funds, alongside forex through integrated accounts.

Before choosing a broker, make sure they offer the markets you’re currently interested in, and consider whether they support products you may want to explore later, such as futures or metals.

broker features image

6. Work with Supportive Brokers

You are the client of your chosen broker, and so that broker is obligated to support you. Ensure this really is the case, review their published support channels, timeframes, and contact information.

Then, road test these support channels. Check they are actually able to give you the type of support they advertise, when they advertise it.

What to look for from an Institutional Broker

If you’re trading high volumes, you need an institutional broker that can handle your size without slippage or execution issues. Professional traders should consider factors such as strong regulatory oversight, deep liquidity, and competitive fee structures when choosing an institutional forex broker.

I’ve worked with several institutional platforms over the years, and the differences between a good one and a mediocre one become obvious fast when you’re moving serious capital.

1. Access to deep liquidity

You need Direct Market Access to Tier-1 liquidity providers like banks and financial institutions. I’ve seen traders try to work large orders through brokers with shallow liquidity pools, and it moves the market against them every time.

DMA lets you see the actual order books and work your positions without telegraphing your intentions to the entire market. The best institutional brokers connect you straight to the same interbank liquidity that major banks use.

2. Execution platforms

API access is non-negotiable for institutional trading. I need my proprietary risk management software communicating directly with my broker, and that requires solid API infrastructure. Look for brokers offering FIX protocol connections and co-location options in data centers like LD4 or NY4.

Low-latency execution isn’t just a nice feature when you’re running algorithmic strategies; it’s the difference between profitable trades and getting picked off by faster participants.

3. Direct support

When you’re trading millions daily, you can’t wait in a support queue. I demand access to a dedicated institutional desk or personal account manager who understands professional trading.

If something breaks during market hours, I need someone picking up the phone immediately, not an email response three days later. This level of service separates true institutional brokers from retail platforms pretending to be professional-grade.

Institutional vs Retail forex brokers

I’ve traded on both sides, and the differences are night and day. Here’s what separates them.

  1. Account sizes: Retail brokers cater to traders with a few thousand dollars, while institutional platforms expect six or seven figures
  2. Spreads: Retail brokers mark up spreads for profit, while institutional brokers offer raw spreads from 0.0 pips with transparent commissions
  3. Execution: Retail platforms struggle with large orders causing slippage, while institutional brokers use VWAP and TWAP algorithms to work positions without market impact
  4. Technology: Retail platforms offer basic tools, while institutional accounts provide API access for algorithmic trading

The best US forex brokers like Interactive Brokers and OANDA bridge this gap, offering institutional-grade execution even for smaller accounts.

What institutional forex brokers offer MetaTrader?

Several institutional brokers support MetaTrader, though it’s not as common as you’d think at the professional level. OANDA and FOREX.com both offer MT4, which I’ve used extensively for running Expert Advisors on institutional accounts. The advantage is you get familiar MT4 functionality combined with institutional pricing and liquidity.

Interactive Brokers doesn’t offer MetaTrader, but their proprietary platforms are frankly superior for professional trading. That said, if you’ve built custom EAs or rely heavily on the best MT4 forex brokers ecosystem, finding an institutional broker that supports it matters. Just verify they offer API access for full automation capabilities, some brokers limit MT4 functionality compared to their proprietary platforms.

What broker offers trading on emerging markets?

For emerging market currency pairs and exotic instruments, Interactive Brokers dominates with access to 105+ currency pairs. I trade emerging markets occasionally, and liquidity can be thin even at institutional brokers, you need a platform with deep connections to regional banks and market makers.

Charles Schwab offers 70+ pairs including some emerging market exposure, though their spreads on exotics are wider than majors. If you’re serious about best futures trading platforms alongside forex, Interactive Brokers’ infrastructure handles both spot and futures markets. Just be prepared for higher spreads and more volatility on exotic pairs compared to EUR/USD or GBP/USD.

Do institutional brokers offer demo accounts?

Yes, most institutional brokers offer demo accounts, though they’re less emphasized than on retail platforms. I always recommend testing an institutional broker’s platform in demo mode before committing capital, even experienced traders need time to learn new execution systems and API integrations.

Best forex demo accounts let you familiarize yourself with professional trading tools like FIX protocols and API connectivity before risking real money. The downside is demo fills don’t always match live execution quality, especially during volatile sessions. Use demos to learn the platform, but don’t assume your live performance will mirror demo results exactly.

Pros And Cons Of Using An Institutional Broker

Advantages

  1. Deep liquidity and superior execution: Large orders get worked without moving the market through VWAP and TWAP algorithms unavailable on retail platforms. Institutional brokers connect you straight to interbank liquidity that major banks use.
  2. Cost efficiency: Tight spreads and low commissions save thousands monthly on high-volume trading. Interactive Brokers charges $2 per lot versus retail markups, while FOREX.com’s RAW spread accounts start at 0.0 pips.
  3. Advanced infrastructure and tools: API access, FIX protocol connectivity, and sophisticated order types give professional traders genuine execution advantages. Interactive Brokers provides direct market access for building custom algorithmic strategies without platform crashes during volatile sessions.

Disadvantages

  1. High entry barriers: Require $100,000+ deposits and minimum monthly volume requirements (typically 1,000+ lots) to access institutional pricing tiers. Without maintaining these thresholds, you pay retail rates despite the complex platform.
  2. Technical complexity: Complex setups demand programming knowledge for API connectivity, it’s not plug-and-play. You’ll need developers or coding skills to utilize institutional-grade tools effectively, adding costs and time.
  3. Less regulatory protection: Institutional traders receive less regulatory protection than retail clients, which matters if you’re used to the best forex brokers for beginners safeguards like guaranteed stop losses or negative balance protection.

Examples of Institutional Trading

Institutional traders use sophisticated strategies that retail traders rarely attempt. Pairs trading is common, you buy one currency pair while simultaneously selling another, profiting from the spread differential as they revert to their mean. I’ve watched institutions work USD/JPY against EUR/JPY to capture relative value opportunities.

Statistical arbitrage is another institutional favorite. You identify pairs at statistically extreme highs and lows, then take opposing positions expecting mean reversion.

These strategies require lightning-fast execution since you’re entering and exiting multiple positions simultaneously. his is why institutional brokers invest heavily in low-latency infrastructure, a few milliseconds of delay kills the edge on arbitrage strategies.

Regulations and Security For Institutional Forex Brokers

CFTC-regulated brokers must maintain at least $20 million in net capital to operate as Forex Dealer Members. This requirement ensures they can handle unexpected market movements without jeopardizing client funds. I only trade with CFTC-registered brokers because the regulatory framework is among the strictest globally.

Your funds must be held in segregated accounts, separate from the broker’s operational capital. This protects you if the broker faces insolvency. For US residents, remember that forex gains are taxable as capital gains, you must report worldwide income including all trading profits.

How to check if a Forex broker is CFTC regulated

Visit the CFTC website and click ‘Learn and Protect’ in the dropdown menu. Select ‘Check Registration and Disciplinary History,’ then click ‘Search the NFA Directory.’ Enter your broker’s name to verify their registration status and see if they’ve been fined for regulatory violations. I always check this before opening an account; it takes two minutes and could save you from scams.

FAQs

What is the CFTC?
The CFTC oversees derivatives and futures markets in the US. They regulate forex brokers to ensure fair trading and client fund protection through segregated accounts, capital requirements, and leverage caps. Every legitimate US broker must register with the CFTC and be an NFA member. If you’re running automated trading strategies, CFTC regulation ensures legal compliance.
Which is the best low spreads broker regulated by CFTC?
FOREX.com offers the tightest spreads among CFTC brokers. Their RAW account tightens to 0.0 pips on majors, while the Standard account averages 1.66 pips. For copy trading platforms, tight spreads matter since you’re replicating high-frequency strategies.
Can Retail Traders Use An Institutional Forex Broker?
Yes, but you need $100,000+ deposits and 1,000+ lots monthly volume for VIP accounts. Most retail traders can’t maintain these minimums. If you’re using AI trading tools, institutional platforms offer better API access, but entry barriers are steep.
What is the difference between CFTC-regulated and offshore?
CFTC brokers operate under US oversight with segregated accounts and capital requirements. Offshore brokers may hold foreign licenses but lack CFTC protection. Some are unregulated, avoid those. For best gold trading platforms, offshore brokers offer better leverage but higher risk.
Is Forex trading legal for institutional traders?
Yes, forex is legal for institutional traders in the US. CFTC brokers like Interactive Brokers and OANDA cater to institutional clients. Professional traders access higher leverage than retail’s 50:1 cap on majors, though same NFA regulations apply.
