What time does the forex market open and close in New Zealand?

The forex market opens with Sydney on Monday morning and closes with New York on Saturday morning. New Zealand and Sydney change clocks together, so the open holds the same New Zealand hours except in the week between their two spring changes. The Saturday close follows New York’s Friday close, which lands on Saturday morning here, so it moves whenever either country changes its clocks. Sydney’s Monday open is Sunday evening in New York, so your week starts on Monday. At least one session is open at every hour in between, so you can trade continuously through the week, and nothing is open through Sunday. The four forex trading sessions run through your day in order: Sydney, then Tokyo, then London, then New York. Sydney and Tokyo cover the New Zealand working day, and London and New York cover the evening and night. The London and New York overlap falls in the New Zealand night. The NZD trades in every forex session, because the market runs continuously through the trading week. Sydney and Tokyo are the sessions that fall in New Zealand business hours. On your clock, Sydney runs 09:00 to 18:00 in both NZST and NZDT, moving to 10:00 to 19:00 NZDT only in the week between New Zealand’s spring change and Sydney’s. Its own hours in Sydney are 07:00 to 16:00. Tokyo runs 12:00 to 21:00 NZST and 13:00 to 22:00 NZDT, one hour later whenever New Zealand is on NZDT, because Japan keeps no daylight saving. The London session runs 19:00 to 04:00 NZST, because London is on BST for the whole NZST season. During NZDT it runs 20:00 to 05:00 NZDT while London is still on BST, from late September to the last Sunday in October and again from the last Sunday in March to the first Sunday in April, and 21:00 to 06:00 NZDT while London is on GMT. In New Zealand the New York session runs 00:00 to 09:00 NZST, because New York is on EDT for the whole NZST season. During NZDT it runs 01:00 to 10:00 NZDT while New York is on EDT and 02:00 to 11:00 NZDT once New York moves to EST. Its own hours are 08:00 to 17:00 in New York. When do London and New York overlap in New Zealand time?

The London and New York overlap runs four hours: 00:00 to 04:00 NZST, 02:00 to 06:00 NZDT with London on GMT and New York on EST, and 01:00 to 05:00 NZDT, both on summer time. It stretches to five hours, 01:00 to 06:00 NZDT, when only New York is on daylight time, from the second Sunday in March to the last Sunday in March, and from the last Sunday in October to the first Sunday in November: in 2026, 8 March 2026 to 29 March 2026 and 25 October 2026 to 1 November 2026. How daylight saving moves the forex sessions in New Zealand

Daylight saving in New Zealand follows fixed rules: NZDT from the last Sunday in September to the first Sunday in April, NZST for the rest of the year. The 2026 to 2027 NZDT season runs from 27 September 2026 to 4 April 2027. Sydney changes in the same direction and, each April, on the same day, so its session keeps the same New Zealand hours except for one week each spring. Tokyo never changes, so its session moves one hour on the New Zealand clock whenever New Zealand does. London and New York change in the opposite season, so their sessions shift on your clock at each of their changes and at each of New Zealand’s.

What is the best time to trade forex in New Zealand?

For most New Zealand readers I would treat the Sydney and Tokyo hours as the practical window, because both sessions fall in your working day and you can fit them around a normal routine. The London and New York overlap has two of the four sessions open at once, and it falls in the New Zealand night, so I would trade it only if you’re awake for it.
