What is the best market maker forex broker?

Market maker brokers act as counterparties to client trades, setting their own prices and typically offering fixed spreads without commission. Pepperstone operates as an ECN broker with RAW spreads from 0.10 pips and 77ms execution speeds, providing straight-through processing to liquidity providers. We compared market maker models against ECN execution, evaluating spread consistency, requote frequency and overall trading costs.

Our list of the top broker in the category is:

What Is A Market Maker In Forex Trading?

A Market Maker act as the opposite party to your trade. This means that if you want to buy, they will provide a bid quote, and if you want to sell, they will provide an ask (or offer) price. As a significant contributor of liquidity to the market, market makers will always take the other side of your trade, regardless of whether they think the trade is in their favour.

One UK-facing broker running that model is assessed in the Accendo Markets Review Of 2026.

Forex is traded over the counter rather than on an exchange, and what that means for pricing is explained in OTC Forex Brokers (2026).

A market maker sets its own price, and the brokers that hold that price steady through the session are compared in 8 Best Fixed Spread Forex Brokers.

Since market makers act as the opposite party to your trade, they make a profit when you lose and suffer a loss when you profit. You might hear them referred to as b-book brokers as they take the opposite side of the ledger.

How Do Market Maker Brokers Work?

Market makers are responsible for setting the bid and ask prices for each transaction, and this is why they are said to “make the market”. They provide their own quotes, which are usually matched to interbank prices. This allows them to buy at the best available bid price and sell at the best price on offer. The difference between the bid and ask prices, also known as the spread, is the source of profits for the broker.

The higher the ask price is compared to the bid price, the more profit the market maker will make. This spread compensates the market maker for the risk they take on with the trade

What is the difference between a Market Maker and an ECN broker?

The difference between a market maker and an ECN Brokers is the following:

  • A market maker is essentially an intermediary who sets the buy and sell price (aka the spread) of a currency and provides the market with liquidity. A market maker is the counterparty to your trades.
  • An ECN broker provides direct market access to you, the trader, and matches you with other buying and selling traders directly. Forex Trading ECN brokers do not set the spread, the liquidity providers set the spread.

Are Market Makers or ECN Brokers Cheaper?

Electronic Communication Networks (ECNs) allow traders to connect directly with the liquidity pool of intermediaries when trading, while market makers act as the intermediaries to your trade. If you buy or sell on an ECN, your order is fulfilled by matching it to the best intermediary in the pool. On the other hand, if you buy or sell Forex through a market maker, the market maker acts as the counterparty for your trade.

ECNs make money primarily through commission. They don’t set bid-ask spreads but instead charge a commission in addition to the spread. For this reason, spreads match interbank prices and can be as low as 0 pips.

Market makers, on the other hand, set their own spreads (or automatically price match from the liquidity pool) and make money through those spreads. For this reason, spreads are widened to include the market makers compensation fee. So spreads are wider with a market maker but may not be cheaper overall once the commission fee ECN broker charges is taken into account.

What are the pros and cons of market makers in forex trading?

  • Less volatile pricing than on ECN platforms
  • Provide liquidity to the markets
  • Sometimes offer tighter spreads to entice traders with more competitive prices
  • No commissions
  • Offer vast market access or depth
  • Can present a conflict of interest as they can trade against you on the markets
  • Not guaranteed the best pricing on the quoted bid and ask prices
  • More vulnerable to slippage as trades are not executed as quickly as ECN brokers
  • Market makers can manipulate currency prices
  • Not suitable for scalpers

How To Open A Trading Account With A Market Maker Broker?

Before opening a trading account with a market maker broker, you should consider the following:

  • Regulation, Choose a market maker broker regulated by a top-tier authority, and check which entity your account would be opened with, since the protections and leverage caps that apply depend on that entity.
  • Range of Markets, Look for a market maker that offers the markets you wish to trade in
  • Trading Costs, Check the trade pricing of each market maker. Stable pricing with tight spreads is ideal. Market makers do not charge commission, but rather their commission is built into the spread.
  • Trading Platforms, Choosing a market maker that offers a user-friendly platform is critical. You should also check for fast execution speeds.
  • Trading Tools, Look for advanced trading tools such as risk meters, pip value calculators, and guaranteed stop-loss orders.
  • Customer Support, Ensure your trading platform offers excellent customer support and a demo account to practise your online trading strategies.

Do Market Makers Have Commission Fees?

While market makers do not have separate commission fees, their compensations are worked into the spreads of clients’ trades. Commissions may seem small but they can accumulate when you trade in larger volumes. Always try to find the lowest commissions when starting as a beginner trader.

Are RAW Spreads Cheaper Than Market Maker Spreads?

Yes, RAW spreads are cheaper than market maker spreads as market maker commissions are worked into the spread. When analysing trading costs and Forex Fees, you should look at the market maker spread against the RAW spread and additional commissions.

The table below compares standard accounts vs ECN or RAW spread accounts. As can be seen, spreads are much lower with an ECN account, but this is before commission costs are factored in.

How do you choose a market-maker trading platform?

Regulation: Start choosing a market maker trading platform by looking for a market maker that is regulated in your own jurisdiction, whether that is the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and the National Futures Association (NFA) in the United States, the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) in Canada, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) in Singapore, Securities Commission Malaysia in Malaysia, or the Financial Markets Authority (FMA) in New Zealand.

Platform User-Friendliness & Advanced Trading Tools: Look for a user-friendly trading platform that offers additional advanced trading tools such as charting tools, pip value calculators, and risk metres.

Trading Fees: Check the spreads on offer. You should look for the lowest and least volatile spreads that you can find.

Range of Markets & Support: Look for markets the broker lets you trade with. Once you have narrowed down your list, ensure that the market maker you choose offers excellent customer support to assist you whenever needed.

Other Market Makers

Our list of Market Makers is by no means extensive, other market makers include Forex.com. StoneX Trading, Plus500 and Trading 212. We could have easily included these brokers on our list but we went with the brokers we thing offer the best services, platforms and costs.

Market Makers vs STP And ECN Brokers

A market maker is a type of brokerage firm where a dealing desk and internal liquidity are used to fill orders. The key features of a market maker are that they set their own bid and ask prices, and act as the counterparty to your trade. Conversely, electronic communication network (ECN) and straight-through processing (STP) are no-dealing desk brokers that use external liquidity sources to determine the spreads they offer traders, as well as fill orders.

the top market maker brokers in 26 list

There are pros and cons to both types of brokerage models. As STP and ECN brokers use a range of external liquidity providers and connect to the interbank market, spreads have the potential to be competitive. Spreads with market makers, however, can be equally competitive if the broker price matches liquidity providers without price interference. Market makers also tend to have more risk management tools, more products to trade and larger education resources. You can view the High Leverage Forex Brokers if you’re looking to trade with higher exposure to the markets.

As market makers set their own bid-ask prices, commission fees are often included in the spread. Yet, some believe market makers have a conflict of interest as they set their own prices and are the counterparty to your trade. Although you will usually get better pricing with STP and ECN brokers, the combination of strong risk management tools and commission-free spreads can appeal to beginners with little forex trading experience.

FAQs

Do market makers trade against you?
Yes, market makers are the counterparty to your trades. While this can mean Market Makers have a conflict of interest since they profit off your losses, it doesn’t always work out this way. The Forex market is very competitive, so market makers still need to ensure their spreads are competitive enough for clients to trade with them.
How do Market Makers make money?
Market makers are the counterparty, meaning they play the liquidity provider to your trades. A market maker makes money through the spread by buying on the bid price and selling on the ask price, ideally from their point of view when trades favour them.
What is a Dealing desk in Forex?
A dealing desk brokerage model means the broker takes the other side to your trades. In other words, they are your counterparty or b-book. Dealing desk brokers are market makers even if they may or may not technically be setting the buy and sell price.
